Kids Night Out Helpers and Science Buddies

Our 5th Graders are Awesome!

Our 5th graders did an awesome job being leaders at out Kids Night Out. I had no behavior problems. The kids were energetic and did not mind doing all of the various jobs required to make the night a success. I was so proud to be their teacher! We had a great turn out and we raised lots of money. As soon as we know how much, I will let you know.

I have posted lots of fun pictures of our first Kinder buddy meeting. This year we will be teaming up with Ms. Vigil’s class and we will be working together with her students once or twice a month. This is another great opportunity for our 5th graders to work as leaders and they sure stepped up during our first meeting. We got to know our buddies and we shared some science books.  I have also posted a few pictures of Kids Night Out so make sure to check the gallery.

Please remember our Outdoor Ed. Informational meeting! It will take place THIS WEDNESDAY from 6:15 pm to 7:00 pm in the West Ridge Cafeteria. Come and get all of your questions answered.

Fall pictures are October 5th. I ran out of time to send the packets home Friday. Please look for them on Monday. There is also information about a fun Walk/Bike/Run to promote Bond Voting. It will be fun!

Conferences are October 14 and 15. Watch for sign up link coming up soon!!!

This week in Science: We will explore earthquakes and mountains. We are getting close to starting our Weathering and Erosion unit!

This week in Literacy: We will continue reading Earthquake Terror, and exploring characters and setting together. We will also start a fun writing activity that goes along with Volcanoes, Earthquakes and Mountains and legends about their birth.

Finally, please help your student stay organized and participate in our class activities. Every student should be doing the following:

  1. Reading at least 20 minutes every night.
  2. Writing about the reading they did in their planners (check stickers in planner for information)
  3. Participating on our Edmodo posting and online conversation twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays)

Don’t hesitate to email or call if you have questions.

Thank you for sharing your children with me!

Tectonic Plates Lab

Tectonic Plates Fun!

Last week we did our very first lab in Science class. By using crackers, frosting and some imagination, we were able to recreate tectonic plate movement in the classroom. The pictures really captured our fun and learning (check out the gallery above). It is not the best situation to do labs like this when we have no sinks or counters in our classroom, but we always make it work and the lesson was a success!

Coming up in Science: We will continue to explore tectonic movement by looking at earthquakes, mountains and volcanoes. We will be doing a bit of everything: reading, creating, writing and exploring. Ask your child about science class and all the fun we have been having!

Coming up in Literacy: Is you child reading at home everyday? Is your child writing on his-her planner everyday? The consistency of reading at home and being accountable to write on planners will set in soon and will become second nature. Reading is the number one best thing you can have your child do at home in order to be successful at school! Also in literacy: Your child should be posting to Edmodo twice a week. This will relate to something in literacy. I will always have your child write all necessary information on their planners, so please check. Did you happen to see their excellent poems about plate tectonics? If not, log into Edmodo. It will make you proud!

Please remember that our fundraiser Kids Night Out is THIS FRIDAY (Sept. 25th)!!! If your child is a helper, he/she is expected to come back to school at 4:45 pm and stay until 8:15 pm. Please be prompt picking your child up! It will be a fun, but long night… All proceeds benefit our Outdoor Ed. trip in November. Speaking of our trip, there will be an informational meeting about the trip on September 30th. This is a DO NOT MISS meeting. Watch for information on the meeting coming home TOMORROW with your 5th grader.

Thank you for sharing your children with me!

A Few Fun Pictures

Our Hat Day was a huge success! We made $305 for our Outdoor Education fund. Thank you for contributing! Hopefully you were able to find the Outdoor Ed. forms I sent home on Wednesday. There will be a lot more information coming home in the next few weeks so be on the lookout for it!

One of the ways we fundraise is by providing a Kids Night Out for West Ridge parents. Our first Kids Night Out is on September 25th. A flyer went home Friday. We will need a few 5th graders to come help. More information about this will be coming to you next week.

Your child should have also brought home Book Order flyers. Please send your order by Wednesday the 16th or make your purchases online by the same deadline.

If you have time and are looking for volunteer opportunities, I have three for you:

  1. Friday Folders – I need a parent who could come and prepare Friday Folders either Thursday pm. or Friday am. every week.
  2. Copies- I need a parent who can come make copies once a week (day and time is totally open)
  3. Parties – We have 3 parties every school year (Halloween, Christmas and Valentines). Do you like planning and coordinating parties? If so, let me know and I will put you to work!

Science focus:

This week in science we will continue to explore Plate Tectonics as one of the forces that changes the surface of the earth. We will explore through maps, a Google Earth application, a fun science lab involving Rice Krispies, graham crackers and frosting, and also some music and dancing.

Your child should be reading at least 20 minutes everyday. Please ask your student what he/she should be writing on the planner every night! Please remember: reading is the BEST thing your child can do as far as preparing his/her brain for school! Read everyday, read everywhere!!!

*** I am working on a new page for this website. The page will have book reviews. These book reviews will help you and your child make good decisions about books! I will let you know when the page is ready!

I am excited for a full week of learning.

Thank you for sharing your children with me!
