The Mystery Tube

Welcome to 5th Grade!

Welcome! I am so excited to work with you this year! Please refer to this site often. The very top has tabs you can access for information about schedules, our classroom brochure and also a little bit about me. I will post once a week. I usually do this on Sunday nights… but I had time tonight to send you a few news.

We started the new school year with a bang! I saw great thinking, problem solving and collaboration when I presented our 5th grade scientists with the mystery tube. Make sure to ask your 5th grader about it and why it is important for scientists to¬†create models of things we can’t experience (like traveling to the center of the earth!). Make sure to check out the pictures of a few of our scientists trying to figure out the mystery!

Your 5th grader has probably told you about our 40 Book Challenge. Yes, 40 is a great number, but we basically want to encourage more reading from our kids. The best thing your child can do to prepare for just about anything at school is READ!!! This is why the only homework your child will have is reading everyday, and responding to their reading once a week. We do a lot of talk about books and promote reading everyday in class. As I take the 40 Book Challenge myself, I am right there with all of the kids, experiencing what they experience.

Edomodo will be used a lot this year! We hope to promote discussions, spark curiosity and share information with your child in a safe, online experience.

Study Hall starts NEXT WEEK!!!! Please note the times (also in our brochure):

Ms. O’Brien – Tuesdays after school until 4:3o pm

Mrs. Marlatt – Thursday mornings – 7:30 am to 8:15 am

Mrs. Sander РThursdays after school until 4:3o pm

Your child is encouraged to come to one or all of these “tutoring” opportunities. These times are for catching up on school work, getting an extra 1-1 help with the learning, more practice, technology access or just time to read. We hope you take advantage of these times.

Remember to send a water bottle (water only please) and a light snack with your child everyday. The rigorous work they do will benefit from a little break and some nutritious food!

Please email me if you have any questions or concerns. I am always available through email and will respond to you right away.

We will be taking some glorious adventures this year, and your 5th grader’s life will be transformed. I am blessed to go alongside each one of them in this journey.

Thank you for sharing your children with me!
