Week of April 21st

A Few Important Dates Coming Up:

Lifeboat Experiments

Lifeboat Experiments

As long as the weather holds, here are the last few big events for your 5th grader:

May 1st – Track and Field Day at Prairie View High School. There are no fees involved. Your child must bring a sack lunch, extra water, a rain jacket (just in case) and sunscreen. A hat, technology and money for the snack bar are optional. Parents are welcomed to come anytime and leave anytime while we are there. ALL STUDENTS MUST RIDE THE SCHOOL BUS TO AND FROM THE EVENT! There are no exceptions to this rule… This is a fun day and unique to 5th graders. Pray for NO RAIN!

May 16th – West Ridge Field Day. 5th graders will run the events so they will need sunscreen and a hat. This is another fun event. Come if you can!

May 19th – Adventure Golf in Westminster – This is our fun field trip, in celebration of our 5th graders and their time at West Ridge. Parents are welcomed to join in the fun. I will need a few volunteers to lead small groups of students. If you are interested, please let me know. There is no fee to our students thanks to our wonderful PTO. They are funding the whole event for us.

May 22 – This is our last day of school and it is a half day. 5th graders do “The Walk”. This is an amazing time when we walk up and down the school and the whole student body lines up outside their rooms to say goodbye. Bring your cameras and DON’T MISS THIS!!!! We make our way all the way to the black top and celebrate with cupcakes. Don’t be alarmed if you see teachers crying their eyes out. Some of us have seeing these kids grow up since kindergartner. We are so proud of them, but it is so hard to say goodbye!

I think that does it for schedules!

We have been having so much fun in the classroom! Since I have taken over all of the science, I have been able to do some wonderful, interactive activities with the students. We studied pendulums and now we are on to lifeboats. We have been using these for creating experiments. Students are learning controlled experiments and what happens when we introduce variables to them. Lifeboats are about experiments that highlight the relationship between density and capacity.  And yes, lifeboats does include water play and there are no sinks in our classrooms! We make do… Irresistible, right? Once we are done with lifeboats, we will move on to airplanes and catapults. There is quite a bit of reading and writing involved, so even though we are deep in our elbows in water and having fun, we are learning a lot too! Please check out a few pictures of the kids in the middle of their experiments by going to the Photos Tab.

Have you located your child’s baby pictures yet? I need them! Please try to get them to me by the end of this week. I don’t want to leave anyone out!

Thank you for sharing your children with me,

Ana Marlatt

Ameritowne!

Getting ready to start our day at AmeriTowne!

Getting ready to start our day at AmeriTowne!

I hope this update finds you relaxed and celebrating the Easter holiday with your family. We had a great, quite day, and enjoyed the company of our three “children”. Happy Easter to all!

AmeriTowne was an absolute success. Please make sure to check the pictures on the Photos Tab. All students worked hard, behaved well and had a great time. We teachers believe all the work put into preparing students for tho special day paid off. We think this will become a 5th grade tradition for all!!! A special thanks to the four volunteers who worked very hard and helped make the the a success: Ryan Soliz, Becky McKinney, Megan Stadler and Mia Basso!!!!!

Tomorrow is our first day taking the science test on computers. Our first session will be at 10:30 am. Please make sure your child brings a “power” snack tomorrow!

Don’t forget that May 1st is our Track and Field day at the high school! More on this coming home soon!

Thank you for sharing your children with me!

Ameritowne!

Letting our hair down after class pictures!

Letting our hair down after class pictures!

Ameritowne is finally here! Tomorrow we will load the busses and head to Cherry Creek. Once there, we will be putting into practice everything we have been working so very hard on for the last month! Your child knows all of this, but here are instructions again:

1. Be on time! We can’t wait for tardies. We will load busses at 8:45 am!!!!!

2. Send your child with a disposable lunch, but not a drink! We are expected to buy our drinks at Ameritowne to generate income for the snack shop.

3. With the exception of Jaylan Vo, our elected town judge, everyone should wear their West Ridge T-Shirts, jeans or sweats and comfortable shoes. The kids will be very busy all day so comfortability is a must!

4. Be prepared to have a wonderful time!

CMAS, our new Science testing on the computers, will be taking place for 5th grade in the next two weeks. Our testing will be on the week of the 21st. This is a new endeavor for our district, so everyone is a bit on edge to see how the process unfolds. You received a letter from Mrs. Brock   about this, but just in case, here is the schedule again:

Monday, April 21st – 10:30 to 12:30

Tuesday, April 22nd – 10:30 to 12:30

Thursday, April 24th – 8:30 to 10:30 am

It is very important to send a good, healthy snack for your child on all days that we test. They will be testing for a while, and a nutritious snack will provide them with the energy they will need to do their best!

We have many big events coming up. I will let you know about our trip to Adventure Golf and also our Field Day as soon as I know. Our special Track Meet at the high school will be on May 1st. Parents are welcomed to come by and enjoy the day or part of the day with us! We are hoping for good weather…

Tomorrow will be a special day. Make sure your child is rested and ready to go in the morning!

Thank you for sharing your children with me,

Old Edisons, Rotations and Elections!

Having fun with an old Edison

Having fun with an old Edison

Welcome to our first week of rotations! We had a great time rotating classes. Students adapted well to the routine. This is a great time to demonstrate a bit of what middle school will look like. Ms. Donabella is teaching Social Studies and Reading. I am teaching Science and Writing, and Ms. O’Brien teaches math. AS far as homework, this is the expectation: Monday through Thursday, students will get math homework. Mondays and Wednesdays will be Social Studies homework and Tuesdays and Thursdays will be Science homework. Please email if you need help or have any questions. We hope your child enjoyed the rotations as much as we did!

Check out the picture of the Edison! Brittany (Richard’s helper) brought one for us to se eon Monday. It was pretty incredible to see something that old. Richard was so excited! He couldn’t even stay at his seat!

AmeriTowne is in full swing! Our elections took place on Wednesday, and Jaylan Vo is our new Judge! Congratulations, Jaylan!!!! Jobs were assigned Friday. Please remember that all permission slips and money are due tomorrow. AmeriTowne trip is in a short week, April 14th!

This week we will be doing a lot of job training to get everyone ready for AmeriTowne. Students will be separated into different groups according to the businesses they will run. Thursday and Friday, students will be in staff meetings run by managers at each business. Very exciting!!!!

In Science this week we will be exploring Animal Adaptations. I have created stations for students to complete. There will be lots of hands on work and a lot of exploration.

Have you located your child’s baby pictures yet? I will need a baby and a “child” picture of each student! It would be great if the child picture was taken at West Ridge. Just email them to me or send the originals. I will scan and give them back to you!

I have a few more pictures on the Photos tab. Check them out! Please let me know if you have any questions!

Thank you for sharing your children with me!
